1885 BOXED SET OF 6 ANIMAL PICTURE PUZZLES CRISS CROSS SLIPS By McLOUGHLIN

Very rare and wonderful, ca1885 Boxed Set of Chromolithograph Animal Puzzles by McLoughlin Brothers. This early and outstanding Set of Strip Puzzles is housed in its original Box which measures approx. 9” by 10” by 1” deep. The Box has wood side flaps and heavy, paperboard top and bottom panels. There is an all-over, paste-down chromolithograph label on the lid of the box that features a fantastic image of two Victorian Children playing with the Puzzles included in the Set.
The Puzzle is fully titled “Criss Cross Spelling Slips / Set Two” and was manufactured by McLoughlin Bros. of New York. The Set includes 6 single sided Puzzles featuring various Wild Animals. Each Puzzle is made up of 8 strips and, when assembled, each measure approx. 10 1/4” by 9 1/4”. The Set is complete and in excellent condition.
Pictured on the six Puzzles are wonderful images of a Wolf, an Elephant, a Hyena, an Elephant, a Lion and a Giraffe. Each of the eight slips that make up each Puzzle (48 strips in all) have a letter at the top and bottom edges. When the Puzzle is properly put together the letters spell out a descriptive phrase related to the animal pictured. Examples include text on the Wolf Puzzle that reads “With Huge Gory Jaws” and text on the Elephant Puzzle that reads “A Beast of Vast Size”. Please see the scans below for views of all of the puzzles and the phrases on each.
A child could also use the letters at the top and bottom of the slips to spell other words and in doing so create images of “mixed up / funny animals”.The image on the lid of the box also shows a child using the slips as building blocks!!
The chromolithography on these Puzzles and the Box is some of THE most beautiful work by McLoughlin Brothers we have ever encountered in the past 42+ years.
This rare and wonderful, Boxed Set of Chromolithograph Strip Puzzles is in very good to excellent condition. The Set is complete and includes all 48 strips that make six different Puzzles. All of the strips display beautifully – the colors are bright and vibrant and there is only light soiling to any of the slips. Three of the slips have old, tight and unobtrusive repairs at their center but otherwise there is no damage and no loss of any kind to any of the pieces.
The Puzzle comes in its original, wood sided, paperboard box with chromolithograph lid which is also in excellent condition – generally clean and crisp and very well preserved. The colors of the pastedown are bright and vibrant and the image is clean with light edge wear only as can be seen in the scans below. All side flaps are present and soundly attached. The bottom paperboard panel is intact and sound and very well preserved.
